House of the Dragon, the popular Game of Thrones (GoT) prequel that premiered on August 21 on HBO Max, already has fans on the edge of their seats waiting to see what happens next. House of The Dragon explains the struggle of House Targaryan to maintain power and order in the seven kingdoms. The story mainly follows the protagonist Rhaenyra Targaryan, played by Milly Alcock, who is named heir to the throne as a woman. Since the throne is male-dominated in the realm of Game of Thrones, this will be the plot line for the show, as King Viserys Targaryen, played by Paddy Considine, and his wife recently gave birth to a male heir.

So far, House of the Dragon has released eight episodes and already has fans hooked, as the show has an 8.8 out of 10 rating on IMDB, a score of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, and great audience reviews. Martin Holmes from tvinsider.com says, “House of the Dragon episode 1 was absolutely fantastic,” and “The House of the Dragon exceeded my expectations. Packing all the great elements that Game of Thrones once had.” Viewers have expressed great love for the show already, and fans eagerly anticipate the rest of this season’s episodes.

Assistant Head of School Courtney Martin, a Game of Thrones mega-fan, has watched the whole GoT series twice now in preparation for House of the Dragon and already has high praise for the show. When asked how she got into watching Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, Martin responded, “I heard people talking about it, and it was still season one when I first started watching. By the time it was the middle of season one, I was hooked.” Martin eased into the show but soon realized how intense and interesting the intricate plot line was and how not many shows could replicate such an entertaining piece of entertainment.

When asked what she thought was going to happen in House of the Dragon, she said:” I was excited because it is a very complex show, and I have learned that you can never fall in love with any character, so I am expecting that with House of the Dragon.” The unexpected turn of events is a crucial part of the experience of being a fan of these shows, because at any point something can always go wrong in an unexpected way, leaving you devastated for episodes to come. I asked Martin what she thought will be foreshadowed in House of the Dragon that happened in Game of Thrones, and Martin said, “I think we will see a lot of connections between Rhaenyra and Daenerys and female leadership in the seven kingdoms and foreshadowing about the Targaryan and how it affects the realm in general.” Martin’s predictions about the foreshadowing of women in power in the seven kingdoms shows how Daenerys was able to conquer the seven kingdoms, because Rhaenyra first contested the throne in House of the Dragon.

Trinity Episcopal School senior Gus Mitchell is also an avid follower and fan of the show. He recently rewatched Game of Thrones with me in order to refresh our brains for the new show. When asked how the show has impressed him to this point, Mitchell responded, “So far, the show has shown much potential and lived up to the high expectations that came with it.” Mitchell also said, ”I like how the House of the Dragon’s plot is similar to Game of Thrones. There are betrayals, main character deaths, and dragons that overpower everyone.” The show still maintains the action-packed and unlikely plot twists that everyone knows and loves from Game of Thrones, but also includes more fiery dragons that we only had glimpses of in the original show.

So far, House of the Dragon already has me intrigued by introducing new characters, who I can immediately follow and become interested in how they play a role in the show. The complexity of the descriptions of characters and how in-depth the writers go with each character already has me hooked on who is going to betray who, and who ultimately will end up on the iron throne. I can’t wait to follow this show as it progresses in the upcoming episodes and seasons.
