Organic Krush: Building Your Own Healthy Options

By Emma de Witt

On a recent weekend, my friend Georgia McManus (‘23) and I walked into the new, modern, and inviting cafe Organic Krush in Short Pump. I had been to this establishment a few times before, but this was all new to Georgia. As we opened the door, we were greeted by the friendly staff, asking us if we knew how to order, as this place uses a different method than most other cafes. We then grabbed mini-clipboards and began checking off what we wanted in our bowls.

Looking down the menu, there are little “V’s” that stand for vegan, “GF” symbols for gluten-free, and other signs, such as dairy free, nut free, and vegetarian, besides each of the options. The first step on the menu is picking your protein. Although the fish and steak were a little more expensive than the tofu and chicken, that is to be expected when you are receiving all-organic meat or protein. The second step after choosing a protein is choosing your toppings. You can choose up to three, and I chose a tofu noodle bowl with pineapple, avocado, and bacon as my toppings. I was unsure about the combination at first, but it turned out to be my favorite combo yet! As you go further down the menu, you choose your dressings, and I picked the lemon olive oil on the side.

We then went over to return the clipboards to the employee, in the contact-free method that Organic Krush promotes. Our only complaint at this point in the ordering process was that the food was quite expensive for just two bowls, but if you are dining at this all-organic fresh cafe, the prices tend to be higher.

At the register, there are so many other options for vegan and gluten-free baked goods, energy shots and drinks, and organic kombucha. In this beautiful array of drinks and health based foods, there was not one processed or unhealthy option, making this cafe live up to his name. Organic Krush caters to a variety of different diets and to everyone’s needs.

The employees even made sure to clean work surfaces in case of any cross contamination of tree nuts. McManus ended up ordering a smoothie with frozen fruit, almond milk, and dark chocolate, and she reported that “It tasted delicious. It has a great blend!”

After placing our order, we ventured over to look around the cafe’s sectioned off areas. There were sections including a kids’ play area with Jenga, cards, an Etch A Sketch, as well as a little work area with charging stations, couches, and dimmed lighting in another area.

Since there was no one else there when we visited, we picked a booth close to the front, and looking around, we were surrounded by uplifting quotes on lit-up walls and amusing bright artwork, as well as bright lights in the high ceilings.

While waiting a short time for our food to come, we watched as the employees brought out all of the fresh ingredients, and made our bowls out in the open, behind a clear glass window. There was current music playing, and overall, the place gave minimalist and Millennial vibes, with the natural light and clean facility.

Our food came, and we had no complaints. It all tasted as fresh and healthy as it looked on the menu. We were there for almost 30 minutes, so the wait time was minimal. Walking out of the cafe, we saw the different options for deliveries, such as GrubHub, and other apps that are available for delivery with this restaurant, so it is accessible to everyone. I’ll definitely be visiting Organic Krush again.
