Brecotea Bakery & Cafe, located at 11544 Busy Street in Midlothian, is known for combining traditional Asian-style baked goods with more modern Western pastries. They offer a wide variety of items, from soft, fluffy breads to detailed pastries and cakes. Brecotea is the kind of place that works whether you are just stopping by for something quick or sitting down to savor your food.
Brecotea first opened its Richmond-area location in 2019 and has since expanded across Virginia and North Carolina. According to the bakery’s “Our Story,” Brecotea “provides a cozy spot for patrons to take pleasure in freshly baked pastries, breads, and cakes,” emphasizing its focus on creating a welcoming environment for customers.
Walking into Brecotea feels less like stepping into a typical bakery and more like entering a carefully designed experience. From the moment you open the door, you are greeted by a warm and modern atmosphere with soft white tones, a clean design, and touches of greenery that make the space feel bright and refreshing. Glass display cases showcase rows of pastries that look almost too perfect to touch.
The ordering process is a part of the charm. Instead of ordering from behind a counter, customers grab a tray and tongs at the entrance, turning a simple outing into something interactive. This self-serve setup encourages exploration. The selection ranges from savory bites to fruit-topped pastries, making it easy to build a varied tray.
Once you have chosen your items, you bring your tray up to the register. Staff can warm certain pastries upon request, and then you can settle in to enjoy your food.
On a recent Saturday morning, I visited Brecotea with my family. We decided to sample a mix of both savory and sweet items from the bakery’s wide selection.

Clockwise from top left: croissant with pistachio cream and raspberries, bacon stick, chicken sandwich, chocolate croissant.
First, the savory chicken sandwich stood out for its simplicity. With soft bread and flavorful chicken that was not overly heavy, it delivered a well-rounded bite. My brother Kevin (’29), noted that, “The chicken sandwich was my favorite. It was simple, but really satisfying.”
The bacon stick followed as another highlight, featuring a flaky, croissant-like pastry topped with a strip of smoky bacon and light seasoning that enhanced its flavor. My dad, Upper School science teacher David Privasky, described it as “simple, but the combination of buttery pastry and salty bacon made it pleasant.”
Moving into the sweeter selections, the strawberry stick was a soft, lightly sweet bread topped with cream and fresh strawberries. Its airy texture paired nicely with the smooth richness of the cream, which did not overpower the fruit.
The berries cream croissant offered a buttery, layered pastry filled with cream and topped with strawberries, blueberries, and berry drizzle. Each bite brought together bright fruit and creamy sweetness.
Ideal for chocolate lovers, the chocolate danish crumbled apart, with the flaky layers falling all over the tray. Inside, the chocolate was warm and melted. My mom, Middle School math teacher Pam Privasky, remarked, “The chocolate croissant wasn’t too sweet, and every bite melted in my mouth. It offered a contrast to the fruitier options.”
Finally, the croissant with pistachio cream and raspberries emerged as one of the most memorable items on the tray. The pistachio cream brought a rich nuttiness, while the raspberries added a tart contrast that cut through the sweetness.
In addition to pastries, Brecotea offers a full drink menu, including boba milk tea, yogurt tea, fresh fruit tea, sparkling teas, and coffee, along with a dessert case filled with cakes. While none were tried during this visit, they add another layer to the bakery’s appeal.
What ties all of these items together is the consistency in execution. Each pastry feels intentional in both flavor and presentation. Beyond the food itself, Brecotea turns a simple bakery visit into something more immersive, and the assortment ensures there is always something new to try.
Brecotea Bakery & Cafe delivers on both taste and atmosphere. From the modern, plant-filled interior to the thoughtfully crafted pastries, every element works together to create something that feels elevated. It is a bakery that invites repeat visits; not just for the food, but for the experience of choosing and discovering something new each time.
