How upperclassmen spend their study hall/free period varies by each person. During a recent E period, Eliana Moore (’27) and Shelby Hook (’27) sat in the Saunders Family Library during their free period in one of the glass rooms, along with five other girls from the class of 2027. Audrey Tichenor (’27) prefers to sit in the front hall of Pitt Hall, instead of in the library, for her free period.
Moore and Hook usually choose to sit in the library with classmates because they enjoy the social aspect of it. Moore described sitting in the library during her free period as a “good balance of talking and work.” She expressed that even though she sits in a room with other classmates, it is useful, and she does not struggle to get her work done. Hook feels that it is a “good opportunity to interact with people.” They both enjoy the interactions they can have during this time, while also being productive.
Tichenor chooses to sit in the front hall instead of the library because “it is quieter.” She believes that she can get more work done while sitting in the front hall. Even though Tichenor does not usually sit with others, she still interacts with her classmates during this period. She expressed that she enjoys when “my friends stop to talk to me when they’re walking past.”
They all agree though that having a free period, where they can choose who and where they want to be with, is preferable to an assigned study hall, which happens during Freshman and Sophomore years. Tichenor said it gives them “more freedom,” which she believes makes everyone more productive.
