Snapshot: Catching Up with Annie Richards

By Kate Hogan

On a recent chilly morning, Upper School health and wellness teacher Annie Richards, clad in her iconic black puffer vest, walked through Estes Café with her trademark smile that makes everyone’s day better. “Each day, I try to bring a positive energy to the community,” she said, and it shows. Whether greeting people she taught three years ago by name, or offering a quick word of encouragement, Richards radiates the kind of grounded kindness that makes Collegiate feel smaller and more connected.

Her positivity comes from how much she values the environment around her. “My favorite thing about Collegiate is the community,” she said, adding that the people here “are ready and willing to help each other and go out of their way to be kind and supportive of each other.”

Today, she’s in her festively decorated office, laptop open, focused on a major element of her curriculum in health and wellness. She explained that she was “currently working on the human sexuality curriculum.” It’s careful, thoughtful work that shapes an important part of the Upper School’s health education.

Despite the full workload, she’s looking ahead with excitement. With the holidays approaching, Richards said she’s most looking forward to slowing down and “being with family.”

In just a few minutes of conversation, it became clear why so many students describe Richards as one of the school’s brightest and kindest presences. Her commitment to spreading joy and to the people around her shines through in every part of her day.
