Snapshot: Rosie & Ceramics Class

If you go to Collegiate, you know one of the most popular art classes is ceramics, taught by the iconic Mary Arzt, who has been teaching this class for over 15 years. On a November morning, we ventured up to the Hershey Center for the Arts to find Arzt’s A period class joined by a special guest: her dog Rosie! According to Arzt, Rosie was there because the “extremely friendly dog was going to be dropped off at the vet after class.” The class was working hard, preparing for their upcoming art show on Dec. 3, where students’ pieces were showcased in the new Hershey gallery.

Artists have been tirelessly working throughout the semester to create pieces that express themselves: “My class has been working so hard, and we’re excited to display our work at the art show,” Emory DeGuenther (‘26) told us. The classes combined individual pieces to create a colorful totem, along with working on individual amazing pieces, such as birdhouses and agateware mugs. According to Arzt, “The totem is a project done at the beginning of the semester, with each student contributing a piece, as a way to develop the idea that my classes are a community. I always start with a group project.” The art show was not only limited to a walk-through exhibit, but visitors had a chance to win a raffle that included masterpieces produced Teddy Revere (‘26) and Arzt herself. Denise Hennig, a visiting potter, recognized exceptional work in Arzt’s classes and also donated a small bowl the art show.

When we asked about the art show, Jane Simkin (’26) remarked, “It’s really important to see student artwork, because it’s more impressive than you might think.”

“I’m really proud of my students’ work, and I hope everyone comes to appreciate what they’ve accomplished,” Arzt beamed. The students’ pieces were on display in the Hershey Center from Dec. 3-10.
