Snapshot: Daytime in the Weight Room with Coach Brown

By Dylan Callaghan

You may have spent time in the Seal Athletic Center’s weight room for a sports team, the offseason program, or various other reasons. However, most people never really think about what goes on there during the school day. Is it some kind of shenanigans? Tomfoolery? Or perhaps even… buffoonery? Far from it.

In an interview with The Match, Collegiate Strength Coach Justin Brown walked through what was on his agenda for the day on a recent Thursday. To start, both he and Collegiate Strength Coach Collin Lawless were mapping out their plans for helping the current 6th Graders transition to the weight room. Although it may seem like a daunting task—trying to help these 6th Graders shape their physiques into that of a Greek god—Brown and Lawless took it on with the utmost confidence. They plan to encourage the 6th Graders to attend Collegiate’s Summer Strength Program to prepare them for their upcoming 7th Grade athletic seasons.

Next on the agenda was revitalizing their piece in the Senior Transition program. Brown wanted to make their presentation as engaging as it could be and to truly educate the current Senior class on how to incorporate health and fitness into post-Collegiate life.

It might all seem mundane to the outside eye, especially when you step into the weight room hear the monotonous air conditioner echoing off the cavernous ceiling, but it is the work done behind the desk there that truly lays the foundation for success in the weight room. Brown took these tasks on with a smile on his face, truly displaying the values of perseverance and hard work that they preach in each lift.

So while there might not be weights clanging or music blasting from wall to wall, it is the work done during the day that truly shapes the successful strength program that Collegiate athletes can take advantage of after school.
